The Wonders of the English Language
The English language is an absolute wonder! There are so many ways to say so many things within the world of English! It is diverse and abundant and just incredible! And, did you know? The English language has incorporated words from many other languages over the centuries too – antique, democracy, and more all come to us from the Greek; language, scholar, and pirate are some that come from Latin; beauty, ballet, and chauffeur all hail from French; while mosquito, burro, and alligator all come to us from the Spanish! We use many, many words in the English language that come directly from other languages! The history of English is truly fascinating.
The thing is though, with all of the diversity in the English language, it is also very complicated and potentially confusing to use and to understand. There are many reasons for this. For one thing, we have many synonyms which are words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings – ie: to, too and two or their, there, and they’re or even for, fore, and four – each of these sets sounds exactly alike in speech but, because each one means a different thing, it is very easy to accidentally use one of these words in the wrong context. Another thing that can make the English language very confusing is our use of contractions – “I don’t” is a short way of saying “I do not” or “he hasn’t” actually means “he has not” – while these contractions can simplify things for a native speaker, they can be really confusing for somebody who is new to the language. One final big thing that makes the English language a bit complicated – punctuation! We use far more punctuation than most languages – it is part of why our language is so diverse but, it is also part of why English is hard to learn.
Don’t get me wrong (see there, a contraction) – I adore the English language! There are nuances and subtleties in language that can only be found in the English language! I love how many ways it can be used and how many tones you can imply with it in the written form but, it is a very difficult language for non-natives to learn and, for that reason, it is always best to learn from a native-speaking teacher if at all possible. A native-speaking professional teacher has grown up using the language in all of its many nuances and can, therefore, help you the most with the subtle differences with which our words are used – all of those tricky synonyms and contractions and punctuation! Even if the English language were not so amazing, it is the most commonly spoken language in the world. That makes it an important skill to have if you want to further your career or even just travel! If you happen to live in France, might I suggest you take advantage of modern technology and take a cours d’anglais par skype avec des professeurs professionnels? English lessons by Skype are a brilliant way to further enhance your language skills, while not even having to leave your house. Imagine you are tired from work and have no desire to leave your house and meet up with others in a class room. Well these days you don’t need to. Just open your computer and your teacher will be there waiting for you for a cours anglais Skype.
Ever wondered how people learn a language but you have found it too difficult? Well, the answer is practice makes perfect. New online technologies are not the only way to study a language though. It’s still important to use other methods such as using books and simply speaking to people.
